Last call

Given the tone of the past few days,I have the feeling that we're just about done here. I'll leave everything as is through the weekend. But unless there is a flood of traffic or an obvious unmet need, I intend to go on hiatus on Monday. Practically speaking, that means I turn off the comments and check the email once in a while. I'll make it a point to post any farewells. And if there are jobs being offered I'll try to get to those.

I can't say it's been fun. It has not. But it has been oddly rewarding. Thank you all for your participation and support.

Let's be careful out there!

  1. I consider your efforts truly heroic. I am so grateful to you for having the cojones to do this.
THANK YOU for all your work. Those of us laid off benefited enormously.

  3. Spartacus, if I could, I'd pin a medal on you ... but then, that would blow your cover. So consider this a virtual pinning of your virtual medal.

Thanks for providing an invaluable service and upholding high ethical standards for this blog.

  4. Thanks.

Since the reorg is still pending, if you could post what's happening with that as you can.

  5. You have been a lifeline for those of us tossed off the sinking A.H. Belo. Thank you.

  6. Wait, wait -- did you see the e-mail asking for REPORTING VOLUNTEERS?

  7. The reorg seems to be happening in plain sight. Not much need for an anonymous bulletin board to help people keep track. Yes, I saw the volunteer memo. No doubt there will continue to be ridicule-inspiring memos from our managers. But you really don't need me to provide a forum for snark. That's what newsrooms are for. :) If enough people really see a need for this to stay open or to re-open, I'll continue to check the e-mail even after I go on hiatus. Maybe I'll hook up a Bat-signal or something.

  8. I don't think it's "ridicule-inspiring" to ask for help covering the Metro weekend shifts. Geez, those folks just lost a huge chunk of their staff. Is it SO AWFUL for someone in another department, who has Metro experience, to consider working a Saturday or Sunday every few months to relieve some of the pressure on Metro? It's overtime for most of us, and it might do some people good to get back in the trenches every once in a while. George wasn't demanding, remember -- he was asking for volunteers. So if you don't want to, don't. But don't snark about a genuine effort to make things easier on some of our colleagues.

  9. I didn't say it was ridicule-DESERVING. But it's clear that it inspired some snark. (I can't imagine there are enough non-Local News folks who would volunteer to make much of a difference. But it's worth asking, I guess.)

  10. I think the point was that maybe there wouldn't be a need for freakin' VOLUNTEERS if some people who were doing a fine job hadn't been let go.
