A different management approach to hard times

FRESNO, Calif. - Some people give a bit back to their community. Then there’s Fresno County School Superintendent Larry Powell, who is giving back $800,000, his compensation for the next three years.

Until his term expires in 2015, Powell will run 325 schools and 35 school districts with 195,000 students, all for less than a starting California teacher earns.
“How much do we need to keep accumulating?’’ asks Powell, 63. “There’s no reason for me to keep stockpiling money.’’

  1. And A.H. Belo CEO takes 300 percent raise while company is still losing money.

  2. By an interesting coincidence, the movie "Shoes of the Fisherman" was on TV last night. Yet another way for upper management to respond to a somewhat different challenge, but it was still committing resources to protect people...Could be inspirational but I'm somehow doubting that A.H. Belo's upper crust is reading this blog.

  3. Rumor summary o' the day: About 40 newsroom jobs to be axed right after Labor Day. The irony of that is damned near painful.

  4. Does anybody really believe the bosses aren't reading this site? They don't care as long as their names aren't mentioned and conflicts with their delusional "saving the institution" mind meld.

Why do you think this site's administrator removes posts containing surnames beginning with D, M, R, S, et al? (You buying the high-road excuse?) It is told to do so, so it does what it's told.

  5. @2:08: Quoting Thurber in another context, "You are a booby." The reason the rules here enforce civility is just the obvious. We have enough problems without mucking around in insults. My purpose here is to provide whatever information I can. The names that have made it onto this blog are those who have told me they've been laid off, plus any tributes people have wanted to give to those self-identified people.

If you want to start a blog where you can toss virtual monkey poop at the AH Belo brass, it is a free country and a free Internet. I might even join you there sometimes. The post where you put your comment here shows that I have no needless love for the bosses. This, however, is a declared no-insult zone and will remain so.

If bosses above the level of editor, those bosses who are forcing the cuts, read this site, I would be very surprised.

  6. Thanks for encouraging civility, & enforcing it if need be. It is bad enough without the flung monkey poop, virtual & otherwise.

  7. Flinging monkey poop can be so liberating! I imagine a virtual Animal House food fight approach could be good for a few yucks.

  8. @7:48: The domain name for monkeypoop.com appears to be available. Let us know when you have it up and running. We could all use some yuks.
